چکیده

Pupillary response is associated with perceptual and cognitive loads in visual and cognitive tasks, but no quantitative link between pupil response and the task workload in visual motor tasks has been confirmed. The objective of this study is to investigate how the changes of task requirement of a visual motor task are reflected by the changes of pupil size. In the present study, a simple continuous aiming task is performed and the task requirement is manipulated and measured by Fitts’ Index of Difficulty (ID), calculated for different combinations of the target size and movement distance. Pupil response is recorded using a remote eye-tracker. The results show that event-triggered pupil dilations in continuous aiming movements respect Fitts’ Law, such that higher task difficulty evokes higher peak pupil dilation and longer peak duration. These findings suggest that pupil diameter can be employed as a physiological indicator to task workload evoked by the task requirement in visual motor tasks. & 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Cognitive and Ocular Factors Jointly Determine Pupil Responses under Equiluminance

Changes in pupil diameter can reflect high-level cognitive signals that depend on central neuromodulatory mechanisms. However, brain mechanisms that adjust pupil size are also exquisitely sensitive to changes in luminance and other events that would be considered a nuisance in cognitive experiments recording pupil size. We implemented a simple auditory experiment involving no changes in visual ...

Pupil Dilation and Eye-tracking

A video-based eye-tracker (e.g., the mobile Eyelink II or Eyelink Remote of SR research, Osgoode, Ontario, Canada) uses video cameras to record the eye position of human subjects, and hence, record pupil dilation and eye movements. The eyetracker puts a video cameras and infrared illuminators in front of the eye to record the position of the eye, cornea reflections, and the size of the pupil. U...

Detection of Changes in Surgical Difficulty: Evidence From Pupil Responses.

BACKGROUND Assessing the workload of surgeons requires technology to continuously monitor surgeons' behaviors without interfering with their performance. We investigated the feasibility of using eye-tracking to reveal surgeons' response to increasing task difficulty. METHODS A controlled study was conducted in a simulated operating room, where 14 subjects were required to perform a laparoscop...

Multiple manifestations of microstimulation in the optic tectum: eye movements, pupil dilations, and sensory priming.

It is well established that the optic tectum (or its mammalian homologue, the superior colliculus) is involved in directing gaze toward salient stimuli. However, salient stimuli typically induce orienting responses beyond gaze shifts. The role of the optic tectum in generating responses such as pupil dilation, galvanic responses, or covert shifts is not clear. In the present work, we studied th...

A circuit for pupil orienting responses: implications for cognitive modulation of pupil size.

Pupil size, as a component of orienting, changes rapidly in response to local salient events in the environment, in addition to its well-known illumination-dependent modulation. Recent research has shown that visual, auditory, or audiovisual stimuli can elicit transient pupil dilation, and the timing and size of the evoked responses are systematically modulated by stimulus salience. Moreover, w...
